Dental for Children Up To 1 Years of Age.
To recognize potential dental problems early, we suggest you bring your child for their first dental check up as soon as the new teeth are starting, around their first birthday.
Early Childhood Dental Tip:
Liquids such as formula, milk and juices contain sugars which can pool against teeth and gums. Bacteria can feed on these sugars and leave acidic plaque behind. This can result in decay often referred to as ‘baby bottle decay’. Make sure to clean your child’s teeth with a warm damp cloth after each feeding. It’s a good practice to wash your child’s teeth and gums in the mornings as well.
Dental for Infants 1 – 3 Years of Age.
As your child grows from one to three, they should develop their primary teeth (also called baby teeth, milk teeth or deciduous teeth). Regular dental visits are extremely important during this time. We want to make sure all your child’s teeth are growing correctly and remain healthy from the very start.
Please don’t fall into the misconception that a child’s primary or ‘baby teeth’ are unimportant because they are “just going to fall out anyway. These primary teeth are important to your child’s tooth development into adulthood.
In addition to chewing, primary teeth serve as:
- Placeholders and spacers for adult teeth,
- The proper development of speech,
- Jawbone and muscles to develop properly,
- A great smile is also important for your child’s self-confidence.
Dental for Toddlers 3 – 6 Years of Age
Your child’s primary teeth should be in place by the age of three to four. This is a great time to teach your child how to care for their own teeth. Teaching your children to care for their own teeth is very important for their dental health. Make sure you take the time to do it properly.
During the toddler years of three to six, you should teach children proper brushing habits. We can provide you and your child with proper brushing techniques. Also, teach you about the proper amount and type of toothpaste that is best. It is important to teach your child not to swallow the toothpaste.
Bring your child in for regular visits and cleanings to ensure the teeth remain healthy. We also will inspect your child’s teeth for any problems before they become serious.
Toddler Dental Tip:
You should discourage your child from thumb sucking as it can lead to oral problems later on. Bring your child in for regular visits and cleanings to ensure they are comfortable when visiting the dental office. This stage of your child’s development often allows us to foresee future problems before they become serious.
Children 6 – 12 years of age
By now your children should be brushing and caring for their own teeth. Please be sure that they are following your instructions and doing a thorough job. You should still supervise some of the brushings at this stage preferably the one before bedtime.
This is also the age you should add daily flossing into your child’s routine. Their motor skills should be able to pick this new skill up quickly. You should continue to supervise this is done properly until the age of ten.
As with most dental and oral health issues, early treatment can prevent more extensive and costly treatment later in life. Correcting your child’s bite can improve their oral health as well as boost their self-confidence.
Our team at Smile Town Dental Group will keep a close eye on your child’s oral development. If your child requires orthodontic treatment, we will recommend the appropriate starting age.
We would be pleased to talk to you about the benefits of orthodontics for yourself or your child next time you are in to see us. Ready to make an appointment? Simply click the blue button below for our contact info.
